By A Computer?
Have you been made a fool of by a computer? Most people have. Just plain suckered into thinking that as long as my data and my software is stored on that box in my desk, everything is as safe as can be. It’s just not true.
Over time you add your more and more of your data and your programs to this box under your desk or a bulky laptop over shoulder or maybe the newest no-keyboard gigantic version of an iPhone to carry around. You want to by done in by a computer? Stick your stuff on it, instead of in The Cloud with a Virtual Desktop to add your collection of computers. Especially when Desktop Anywhere offers a Free Virtual Desktop.
I am not recommending that you put all your data, folders, files and software in The Cloud. Just the stuff you need a lot. You just put the data that you need most frequently up there that you feel comfortable with and you will find you add more and more to your Virtual Desktop and Cloud Data Storage as you go. That is simply because you want and need. And you want and need your data where you are, not where a computer is.
Leave your desk and potted plant by your hardware if you want, but not your commonly used data. Truthfully, no data is really safe if it is on a network. The trouble is, all your computers are already on networks now!
Believe me, if Fortune 500 Companies, Intelligence Agencies and everyone else with something of value can be hacked, you can. Even for the sophisticated technology professional, much less the average user, there is risk on interconnected computers. The best defense an individual has is a mixture of diligence, safe practices, some luck and the fact that entities like big banks have a lot more interesting stuff on their systems than you likely do to entice the best hackers.
In any case, you do have to be careful. But, the notion that having your data on a box under your desk is going to protect you from being done in by a computer is nonsense. You could easily find yourself losing your data or maybe worse, someone stealing it regardless of what network device it is on.
If something is so valuable that people are constantly trying to compromise your digital perimeter to get at it, by all means keep it out of the cloud and get it off any networked device. There are a few things I, and most people, have that belong strictly off the network, but most of my data belongs somewhere I can get to it. Somewhere in the cloud.
Don’t be done in by a computer. Don’t let that network connected square box convince you that if you lock your data away on it, it will be safe. It’s mostly you that won’t be able to access it. For most data, for most people, that is just being done in by a computer.
