What Is A Computer?

What is a computer? What if the computer is a browser on a computer or a browser on any device?  The reality is in today’s world of ubiquitous Internet access and mature Cloud technologies, the computer can, is, and ultimately will reside in the browser, often as a desktop somewhere in the cloud.

Recently I read an online article talking about the implications of new generations of children and the impact devices like iPhones and iPads were having on them.  In the article there was a video of a 3 year old child looking at a magazine. As the child was looking at the various pictures in the magazine the child kept attempting to turn the pages by sliding his finger over the pictures to turn the page. It was the same motion to navigate through an iPad or iPhone.  Current technology is rendering obsolete an entire generation’s expectations of how things work.  It is the same with the traditional concept of what is a computer.  The days of thinking of a computer as an object taking up desk space are numbered.

Similarly the concept of what is a browser is also evolving and transforming.  With the proliferation of web based application and services as well as the invasion of the web browser as the vehicle for using web based applications and computers, the question, what is a browser, has to be understood as the user destination.  The browser is one’s bank, their doctor’s office, or even their job. Better still, the browser is (or could be) one’s computer.  There is no reason anymore to have to buy a PC or MAC.  Today the computer is the browser and the browser is the computer. Your desktop is no different. It too belongs in the Cloud.

Businesses are transforming their entire technology infrastructures into Cloud (Internet accessible) based architectures.  The move to cloud based Information Technology (IT) is well beyond theory. Today, small, medium and large organizations are actively moving their technologies to transform their IT cost and service models.

Who wants to worry about failing hardware or security patches to their operating systems?  Who wants to suffer the frustration of not having access to their data and services because they are away from their office or home?  No one does! Not businesses and not individuals.

Before long when one asks a child what a computer is, they are likely going to get a response of, “you mean Firefox, or Safari, or IE,” or… you get the idea!  For those of us who are technological laggards, technological dinosaurs, we need to adapt or be forever lost and forgotten.

What is a computer? It is the Cloud. What is a Cloud? It is the computer! Your computer. See it, use it, believe it: You can today! Check out a free computer via your favorite browser by contacting us!
