Cloud

Cloud is a technology term that came to be from old system diagrams as far back as the 1980’s. Corporations, developing some of the first widespread network systems, referred to their network configuration in Presentations as a Cloud graphic positioned between users, computers, servers, storage, etc.

At the time, discussing the “Cloud” just confused the system development, deployment and support meetings. Few people understood much about the network itself and the Cloud represented that architecture that was just there and you didn’t have to know how it worked any more than you had to understand the electrical grid to plug in a toaster.

The Cloud was just there, it worked and that was that. It seems that usage of a graphical Cloud drawn in between servers, computers, drives, wires and people was pretty on point. The Magic of the Internet and World Wide Web is still called Cloud and few understand what it does. Today’s cloud though has way more than a billion people on it and billions of devices connected to it with much more to come.
